2008 Call for Papers and Posters

Friday, January 25, 2008

To: North Central Branch Members of the Entomological Society of America

From: Rick Weinzierl, 2007-08 NCB President

Hello everyone. It's my pleasure to announce that it's now time for paper and poster (and more symposia) submissions for the NCB Annual Meeting, March 24-27, 2008!

The slate of symposia for the 2008 meeting of the North Central Branch of the Entomological Society of America is taking shape, and now the web site is up and ready to receive submissions for 10-minute papers and posters -- for student competition sessions as well as general submissions. In addition, we still have room for more symposia. Here are the key points for taking part in the 2008 NCB program:

  • To submit a poster or 10-minute paper, follow the instructions on the branch web site . Be sure to indicate whether or not your presentation is to be part of the student competition. The deadline for paper and poster submissions is Friday February 22, 2008.
  • We have room for a couple more symposia in addition to those under development as listed below. To propose a symposium topic that is not in the list below, contact the program co-chairs, Celeste Welty (welty.1@osu.edu) and Kelly Cook Estes (kcook8@uiuc.edu). The deadline for completed proposals for symposia is February 15, 2008. (Symposium organizers should work with the program co-chairs to submit presentations on the web site.)
  • Begin making your travel plans.  Meeting and hotel registration procedures will be emailed to members and posted on the branch web site in a few days; the reservation deadline for the negotiated room rate at the Hyatt will be February 25, 2008, and the pre-registration deadline for the meeting will be March 1, 2008. The program officially begins on Monday evening, March 24, with the Photo Salon at 6:00 p.m. and the first round of the Linnaean Games at 7:00. The final paper sessions and symposia will end around noon on Thursday, March 27. Student competition papers will be presented on Tuesday morning, March 25, and student competition posters will be displayed on the 25th as well. At least ten symposia will be presented from Tuesday afternoon through Thursday morning, with an Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, March 26. Wednesday evening will offer a match between the winning Linnaean Games team and a panel of masters (yes, that's the same as old-timers), to be followed by a mixer.
  • Special Acarology Workshop: Before the formal program begins, Hans Klompen of OSU‚s Acarology Lab will lead a special 4-hour workshop on mite identification from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on March 24. There is no charge for this workshop, but participation will be limited to the first 20 registrants...for more information and to register, contact Celeste Welty at welty.1@osu.edu.

Topics or titles for symposia that are planned and under development include:

  • Program Symposium: At the Forefronts of Entomology
  • Student Affairs Symposium: Walking the Entomological Line: Making the Transition from Student to Professional
  • BCE Symposium: Urban IPM Programs in the Midwest
  • Advances in Fruit and Vegetable IPM
  • Emerging and Invasive Pests of Urban Landscapes
  • Exploring Plant-mediated Outcomes in Arthropod Biological Control
  • Genetics and Genomics of Agronomic Pests: From Populations to Individuals to Genes
  • Systematics and Bioinformatics in the 21st Century
  • The Changing Face of Field Crop Insect Management
  • Citizen Science in the Study of Insect Biodiversity
The 2008 meeting promises excellent symposia, a variety of submitted papers, and countless opportunities to interact with colleagues and meet new people. I hope that you'll take advantage of these opportunities by submitting a presentation, registering, and attending. Our members make the branch meeting great, and I hope you will contribute and reap the benefits of others‚ contributions by participating in this year‚s program.

Sincerely,

Rick Weinzierl
